- WebGopher 0.33
- ==============
-
- Welcome to the third (and final) beta release of WebGopher.
-
- NOTE:This is a test release. Not everything functions, and there are many
- known bugs present within the main app listing.
-
- NOTE:This application supports interactive help (kinda :-) ).
-
- This application is designed to allow users of any 'World Wide Web'
- browser which is compatible with the ArcWeb fetcher protocol (ArcWeb or
- Webster for example) to access resources via 'gopher:' URLs.
-
- Gopher menus are converted into HTML files, and gopher resources are
- automatically stored in a resource directory for later retrieval.
- An interface to gopher/veronica searches is also provided.
-
- This application is designed in such a way, that the user can configure
- it to his/her specification and then leave it to function transparently
- with their browser.
-
- Briefly, you should ensure that !GopherRes has been seen before fetching
- gopher resources. Failure to do this will likely cause a fatal error.
-
- This is a very early version, with no comprehensive documentaion. Indeed
- this application is likely to be replaced with another application under a
- different name, that'll allow access to gopher via direct connection OR
- via a proxy. This version will also include support for other URLs under
- the one application. FTP will be supported via a proxy and eventually via
- direct protocol (EVENTUALLY). An improved HTTP fetcher, Telnet URL
- handler and possibly some others will also be present. Each will be
- configurable and will be designed to integrate as transparently as
- possible into the WWW suite.
-
- This version of WebGopher has been released in the hope that somebody will
- find it useful, before a fuller version is released.
-
- I would appreciate any correspondence on this application as I would hope
- feedback will fuel developement of the next release. You can E-Mail me at,
-
- neil@sitex.demon.co.uk
-
- or possibly a disscusion within one or more of the Acorn related news
- groups would be helpful.
-
- I sincerely hope this version functions correctly. It has caused serious
- problems on my Risc PC, but these have (hopefully) been fixed.
- Therefore, the use of this application during E-Mail or news transfer
- should be regarded as a suicidal endevour at best.

- -=====================-
- UPDATES - 0.30
- -=====================-
-
- Many problems have been sorted out in this second release.
- The gopher-html converter is now a LITTLE bit better at coping with dodgy
- gopher data (this happens a lot with veronica search machines).
-
- It also includes prototype versions of Telnet and FTP URL handlers.
- These have NOT been fully tested, but seem to function OK most of the
- time. The FTP handlers are via proxy machine only at the moment. I hope
- to add direct FTP in a later application that will be born out from the
- mistakes of WebGopher.
-
- For a few short helpful text files on using WebGopher, be sure to look
- in the 'Docs' directory.
-
- -======================-
- UPDATES - 0.33
- -======================-
-
- Various internal improvements now mean WebGopher should perform better when
- used for gopher fetching. The gopher-html convertor is now in ARM code and
- as such should be MUCH faster.
-
- I have now provided prototype support for WAIS and HTTP URLs. Note, however
- that WAIS doesn't seem to work at present.
-
- The NEW HTTP fetcher is only present in a primitive form so as to solve
- a few problems with the usage of proxy machines. The HTTP fetcher is turned
- OFF by default, as it could cause problems if you have another HTTP fetcher
- loaded (such as ArcWebK9Q). WebGophers HTTP fetcher features a crude MIME
- header stripper, and file content checking. These will be 'fleshed-out'
- for the next release (see below).
-
- NOTE: Although posting is available as an option in the options window, do
- NOT attempt to activate it as it is incomplete at the moment.
-
- WebGopher is dead ..... LONG live WebGopher ....
- ------------------------------------------------
-
- This release (0.33) is the final version of WebGopher. It was only ever
- ment as an intrim application and will now be re-worked into a more
- complete fetcher system. The current working title of this application
- is 'WaX' and it will be available first (in development forms) from
- 'ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/archimedes/developers/'
-
- In the meantime, any comments or wish-lists would be greatfully received.
